At 69, She Finally Enjoys Saying Her Age

Rama Gupta had accepted breathlessness, swelling, and constant pain as the price of getting older. At 69, she decided otherwise.

At 69, She Finally Enjoys Saying Her Age
Rama Gupta is a businesswoman and a homemaker. Before she joined, her day was marked by acidity, bloating, headaches, pain in every joint, swelling in her legs, and breathlessness that came from very little exertion.
She had reached a conclusion about it. This is simply how things are now. People around her had been saying a version of the same thing for a while. You have worked enough, they told her. Slow down.

The thought she does not hide

There was a period when a darker thought entered her mind about what would happen to her family if something happened to her. She describes it plainly and calls it what it was, whether depression or simply a mind that had run out of room.
Sitting still, she felt her weight increasing. Every attempt at dieting produced less than a kilo in a month, and whatever came off returned soon after.

Two and a half kilos

The first month gave her two and a half kilos, and she had not given anything up to get it.
That was the moment the doubt broke. Dieting had given her under one kilo a month while making her miserable. This gave her more than double that without asking her to abandon her food. So she renewed for another month and lost two and a half kilos again.
She did not stop until she reached her ideal body weight.

The part about age

Rama is sixty-nine. She says something about that number that is worth quoting properly, because it inverts what most people feel.
She used to dislike being asked her age. Now she enjoys telling people because the answer surprises them.
Her message to anyone hesitating is practical rather than inspirational. Attend the prime-time session daily and simply listen. That alone, she says, will carry you across.
She adds a warning that lands harder coming from someone her age. Without a functioning body, you will not get far at any age. Young, you will not move forward. Older, you become a burden on other people. She refused both.
